About Me
I am the author of the bestselling Nightingale novels, a series of books set in an East End hospital in the 1930s. The first book in the series, The Nightingale Girls, was published by Arrow in 2012. Prior to that, I had eight contemporary novels published by Orion.

I was born and brought up in south London. As a child, I always enjoyed reading and telling stories, but I was told at school that becoming a professional writer was out of the question for a working class girl like me. So I left school and went to work in admin. But I kept pestering magazines with my stories and when I was 19 I was finally given my first ‘real’ writing job, creating photo love stories for teenage magazines, which was a great lesson in plotting and dialogue! I then trained as a journalist and worked in women’s magazines for a number of years, before turning freelance and moving to York (my spiritual home!). I first visited the city when I was 20, to see a friend at the university. I stepped out of the station, saw the Minster and the city walls and thought, ‘This is the place for me.’ Which was a shock since prior to that I’d rarely ventured north of the Thames! I finally moved up here 20 years ago with my husband and daughter, and now I can’t imagine wanting to live anywhere else.

  1. As a nurse I loved these books and can relate so well to the hard work and the laughs giggles and memories of many patients who made recovery from serious illness and sadly many who bore illness bravely before dying. A good read and such fun.

    • Hi Lyn, thanks for your very kind comments. I’m glad you enjoyed the books. It always means so much to me when a ‘real’ nurse says I’ve got something right! There are three more Nightingales books planned, with The Nightingale Nurses due out at the end of October. I really hope you like it! Thanks again for getting in touch, Dx
